District: Imphal West

The Imphal West District falls in the Category of Manipur valley region. It is a tiny plain at the centre of Manipur surrounded by Plains of other districts. Imphal City, the State Capital is the nodal functional centre of this District. It is surrounded by Senapati District on the north, on the east by Imphal East and Thoubal districts, on the south by Thoubal and Bishnupur Districts, and on the west by Senapati and Bishnupur Districts.

Manipur State Museum

This interesting Museum near the Polo Ground has a fairly good collection and display of tribal heritage and a collection of portraits of Manipur's former rulers. Particularly interesting items are costumes, arms & ammunitions, relics and historical documents.
Saheed Minar
Shaheed Minar is a symbol of sacrifice located in the capital city of Imphal. It is also known as Martyr's Memorial. It was erected in the memory of the courageous and brave Meetei and the tribal warriors who happily sacrificed their lives and families to save their land from the British in 1891. They fought against the British army till their last breath. It is situated in the Bir Tikendrajit Park and can be easily reached. Not only the men but the Manipuri women also showed a great deal of courage while fighting against the British on 12th December 1939. The Nupee-lal (Women's war) Memorial near the Imphal Head Post Office was built in the honour of these women who sacrificed their lives for fighting for injustice.

Zoological Garden at Iroisenba

Manipur Zoological Garden at Iroisemba is only 6 kms. on the ImphalKangchup Road at the foot of the pine growing hillocks . Here apart from various endangered species, tourists can have an opportunity to see the graceful brow antlered deer (Sangai), one of the rarest & endangered species in the world, in sylvan surroundings.
Khonghampat Orchidarium

10 kms. from Imphal on National Highway No. 39 is the Central Orchidarium which covers 200 acres and houses over 110 rare varieties of orchids, which include dozens of endemic species. The peak blooming season is March-April.

A unique all women market, having 3,000 or more Imas or mothers who run the stalls. It is splited into two sections on either side of the road. Vegetables, fruits, fishes and household groceries are sold on one side and exquisite handlooms and household tools on the other.
